Faculty-Student Relationship
Wherever possible, direct communication between the student and the professor is encouraged. The professors would rather hear directly from the student that they are having a problem or that they need an accommodation. Often the professor will call the ASC Coordinator to discuss an accommodation or specific teaching strategies after they have spoken with the student. In general, professors want to see that students care enough about their learning to ask for help when they need it. Teachers often have more respect for the student who is willing to ask for assistance as needed. The faculty at McDaniel College have been very willing to work with students with disabilities. Some faculty members have been very innovative and have suggested accommodations that have been very helpful for ASC students.
It is very important that the student behave in a respectful manner in all dealings with faculty. The student should attempt to convey his/her interest in the material that the professor is presenting. The student should keep in mind that faculty are teaching in the academic area that is the most important to them- that's why they teach it. They have based their life's work in that field.
The student will be much more successful if he/she follows these simple suggestions:
- arrive early for class and sit in the front row every day
- be prepared for class every day
- ask questions about the material during class or during office hours
- pay attention and take notes
