General Suggestions
- Meet with an ASC staff member Coordinator, learn about the
services and accommodations available to you, and know your legal
rights under Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act.
- Become knowledgeable and comfortable discussing your own
disability and the way that it affects you personally and
academically. Don't fall into the trap of avoiding services
because of embarrassment.
- If you know that you will need accommodations, see an ASC
staff member and your professors early in the semester. Speaking
up at the beginning will make you feel more prepared and organized
and will allow the professor time to be more thoughtful about the
possible ways to accommodate your needs.
- Develop your own support system by confiding in a trusted
friend, counselor, or therapist. In times of stress, you will
benefit by having someone to help you think through the strategies
that will support your academic efforts at McDaniel College. Attend the monthly
support group meetings offered to ASC students.
- If possible, find another student with a disability to talk to
about your school work.
- Try to maintain a healthy balance of social, academic, and
athletic activities in your schedule. Do not isolate yourself.
