Levels of Service for Students with Disabilities

    The Academic Skills Center (A.S.C.) of Western Maryland College provides three levels of services to students with documented disabilities. Students who are accepted to W.M.C. choose the level of service that best meets their needs. Fees for Levels 2 and 3 cover the entire academic year. Students who enroll in the college for the Spring semester will be charged the yearly fee. Levels 2 and 3 each include all of the services of the level(s) above it. A description of the services provided at each level follows.

Level 1 - No fee (in addition to tuition)

  • Provision of appropriate accommodations including such things as extended time on tests, alternate test taking sites, scribes, readers, textbooks on tape, etc.
  • Student departmental tutors
  • Survival handbook
  • Two hours per semester advising with ASC Director
  • Participation in bimonthly support group for ASC students
  • Enrollment in course entitled Your College Experience (non-credit)

Level 2 - $1,000 fee (in addition to tuition)

  • Prescheduling of courses
  • Weekly consultations with ASC staff 
  • Use of supervised study lab with access to Mac computer with the following programs:
    • word processing program with spell check,
    • grammar check program
  • Evening use of the Academic Skills Center for supervised study sessions
  • Assignment of an ASC peer mentor

Level 3 - $1,500 fee (in addition to tuition)

  • Diagnostic testing by consulting psychologist during the Fall semester
  • Planning, development, and implementation of  individualized academic program
  • One hour per week of one-on-one study skills enhancement/tutoring with ASC staff
