Policies and Procedures
Policy Statement
McDaniel College makes programs and activities on campus available to every enrolled student and is committed to offering a campus environment free of discrimination and bias in matters affecting individuals with disabilities. The College admits qualified students and believes that no one should be barred from an education because of a disability. Program accessibility is assured by means of reasonable accommodations.
In order to make reasonable accommodations in the variety of learning activities offered by the College, the ASC provides services to students with disabilities enrolled at Western Maryland College. As stated in Section 504 of the Federal Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, it is the student's responsibility to make his or her disabling condition known and to request academic adjustments in a timely manner. The ASC requests any student seeking academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, or interpreter services to:
If the student is unsure about such procedures, the ASC will assist them in obtaining the required documentation. Where deemed necessary, academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and interpreter services will be provided to address the needs of the student.
Notifying Faculty of Disability & Requesting Accommodations
Students with disabilities who require accommodations and want faculty to be notified of a disability must identify themselves to the ASC Coordinator. Students will provide documentation supporting the request for accommodations. The Coordinator determines the appropriate accommodations, based on the documentation, and drafts a memo that explains the disability and requests specific classroom accommodations. At the beginning of each semester, the student must request copies of this memo. Each student is responsible for giving copies of these memos to their professors. The faculty will not be informed of the request for accommodations unless the student follows this procedure. It is the student's choice whether or not to inform the faculty of the disability.
Obtaining Permission for a Foreign Language Substitution
It is appropriate for some students with disabilities to receive substitute course work in order to fulfill the foreign language requirement. It is not appropriate for every student with a disability to receive this substitution. If there is sufficient support for the substitution a recommendation will be made to the Provost of the College. With the approval of the Provost, course substitution can go into effect. Usually, Cross Cultural Studies courses are used as substitutes.
Note: Some students choose to satisfy the BLAR requirement by transferring the course credits in from a community college.
